Understanding your natural gas bill
Several factors determine the amount of your natural gas bill each month. The typical residential natural gas bill is made up of four key areas that may affect their monthly bill amount: the cost of gas, delivery charge, the Qualified Infrastructure Plant charge and taxes.
- Natural gas cost (55%-65% of your bill). Natural gas costs make up the largest portion of your bill. This is the charge for the natural gas you use during the billing month. The charge is calculated by multiplying your usage by the average cost per therm we pay to purchase the natural gas. The amount you pay, varies monthly based on the cost of gas and the amount you use. We buy natural gas on the commodities market, similar to goods such as oil or milk. The price we pay for the natural gas is the same price you pay — there is no markup.
- Delivery charge (25%-35% of your bill). The delivery charge includes delivering natural gas from the gate station to your location, storing the natural gas, and covering the fixed costs of providing your service, including equipment, billing and programs.
- Taxes (5%-10% of your bill). Taxes include the gross revenue tax instituted by the state of Illinois to fund the Illinois Commerce Commission and the state gas revenue tax. Some customer bills also include a municipal utility tax imposed by the customer’s respective municipality.
